Life In PRISON by Barbara Cottman tells the story of Stanley Williams.
The story starts with, Stanley “Tookie’’ Williams. Back in 1971 when seventeen year old Stanley met another seventeen year old named Raymond Lee Washington. Raymond and Stanley formed a street gang in South Central Los Angeles called the crips gang. It was meant to protect them from other neighborhood gangs. About thirty other friends were members of the group with Stan and Raymond who were the first members of the gang.
Then Stans friend raymond was murdered in 1979 by another gang member. Two years after raymond was killed Stan was found guilty of killing four people during two robberies. Stan was sent to San Quentin death row on April 20, 1981. He has been there ever since his imprisonment and his death sentence. Stan really regrets his past history with the crips. He is doing whatever it takes to guide young people away from gang life and prison. Stan also explains how and what prison life is like.
In the end, he worked really hard to make amends for the mistakes he made. The story of Stanley Williams is both fascinating and tragic. I think even the pope wrote to the governor
of California for mercy, but did not get it. There also is a movie made for Stanley called Redemption. I would recommend anyone who one wants to know about Staley’s life to
go watch the movie.
This book was good for a number of reasons. First, because Stan knows what he did wrong and accepts to it.
Second, because Stan is trying explain why prison is not the place to go and to make good decisions.
This book is similar to REDEMPTION http://books.google.com/books?id=02I7AgAACAAJ&source=gbs_similarbooks because they
both explain Staley’s life
