This story starts out with a teenage boy named Austin. He is a very depressed person and somewhat suicidal person. You meet his 2 best friends Dobie and Curtis. All 3 of them also play football. There hangout spot is Dairy Queen. One night at DQ Austin meets a girl named Heather. They instantly hit things off, and Austin ask her on a date. Every day after school Austin takes Dobie home from football since Austin has a car, now Austin starts to take Heather and Dobie home everyday. Austin gets so caught up with Heather that Curtis has to start taking Dobie home everyday after football. Austin and Heather go on a date just about every weekend, Austin even met her mom. One day after school they were in the DQ parking lot and Heather thought that Austin was mad at her so she decided to please him and then about a week later they went all the way.

Then In there 6th football game Curtis misses the ball and had a bad game all together. He is very upset with himself for playing as bad as he did, and just ignores everyone because he doesn't want to be reminded about the game yet talk about it. That night after there football game Dobie and Curtis ask Austin to go to the after party with them but Austin says "no" because he is going to hangout with Heather. Dobie and Curtis just think that Austin is so busy and obsessed with heather he never even wants to hang with them anymore. The next day at football practice the coach decided to play a game called Bull-in-a-ring. Its were there is a guy in the center of the circle and guy take turns trying to tackle him down. Of course Curtis is in the middle because he played bad last night. After about 5 or 6 guys tackled him to the ground and he was tired he layed there while coach yelled at all the other boys to get on the line for sprints. Austin didn’t know if he was suppose to help his best friend up off the ground or just leave him to go to sprints, so Austin just left him. While Austin is at heathers he opens a drawer and there is a letter in it from her dad, she slams the drawer closed and gets mad at Austin. Austin and Heather get in a little argument the next day but then made up and went to DQ. Heather got mad at him again and he goes to the bathroom and thinks about killing himself and was about to cut himself but then his mom comes to the door to tell him that Heather is on the phone. Then he goes back over to hethers house. Heather explains to him that her dad had shot himself after her parents got a divorced when she was 6 and that was the letter he left her dad before he had killed himself. Austin tells her how his dad died of cancer when he was young too.

In the end Heather broke up with Austin. I think this was a very good book over all because it was filled with a lot of action and very eventful. Second it kept me busy and I didn’t want to put it down. This book is very similar to the show Friday Night Lights because its about a bunch of highschool football players and there struggles.
